Centrifugal Pumps

What is a Centrifugal Pump?

Centrifugal pumps are ideal in applications where fluids, such as chemicals, water, and light oils, need to be transferred at low-pressure rates, high capacity, and lower viscosity. In layman’s terms, it is a pump that uses rotating impellers to move fluids from one point to another with force and unlike other pumps, it can run continuously. Knowing that pumps need to be reliable at all times is why we at Prochem Chemical Pump Manufacturers offer a range of centrifugal pumps that will handle any application.

The Working Principle of Centrifugal Pumps

Centrifugal pumps are designed to produce specific flows or move fluids from low to high levels. This is done through the pump converting rotational energy from the motor to energy in the moving fluid. The two main components of centrifugal pumps are the impellers, which are the rotating parts of the pump and the casing, which is the airtight passage around the impellers. The conversion of energy is made possible by the impellers and casing. Fluid enters the casing, falling onto the impeller blades where, at the eye of the impeller, it rotates radially out until it leaves the impeller into the diffuser part of the casing. While passing through the impeller, the fluid gains both velocity and pressure.

Applications of Centrifugal PumpsCentrifugal Pumps

As centrifugal pumps can be used for several applications, they come with varying capacities and sizes. It is important to consider the pressure and volume requirements first to ensure that the right size pump is being used. Various applications include:

  • Being used for irrigation, transferring water from reservoirs to fields, and powering farm equipment
  • Commonly used to move water through filtration systems in water-treatment plants
  • Transferring liquids between process units in oil refineries
  • Used in mining applications to transfer water from one location to another

Preferred Pump in the Chemical Industry

The chemical industry needs to rely on pumps that can withstand harsh applications and are resistant to corrosion, making magnetic-drive pumps the best type of centrifugal pump to use. Magnetic-drive pumps can transfer a wide range of flows and move chemicals safely and efficiently. As the name suggests, these centrifugal pumps are driven by magnets, removing the need for a direct connection between the motor shaft and impellers, and eliminating the need for a seal. Having no seal to wear out or leak means lower maintenance and longer pump life. Some models offer dry-run capabilities, which are not typically found in mechanical pumps. Our range of Finish Thompson Magnetic-Drive Pumps provides dry-running abilities and corrosion resistance, making them the ideal pumps for use in the chemical industry.

Advantages of Centrifugal Pumps

With being used across a wide range of industries, centrifugal pumps offer a host of advantages, which include:

  • They are easily customised to meet specific needs.
  • The option of a mechanical seal or the seal-less design of a magnetic-drive pump, adds to the versatility of centrifugal pumps.
  • They are efficient, reliable, and versatile, providing years of trouble-free service.
